More than a third of TG Jones post offices to close by early 2027
Analysis of Post Office records shows 36 post offices inside TG Jones stores have already closed this year, with 34 more set to shut by early 2027.
More than a third of post offices inside TG Jones stores are to close by early 2027, raising fears towns and city centres could be left as “postal deserts”.
According to Post Office records analysed by The Guardian, 36 branches inside the former WH Smith chain have closed this year, with 34 more due by early 2027. The 70 are more than a third of the 180 TG Jones operated before Modella’s restructuring won creditor approval in July, more than the 60 feared.
Up to 150 of the 450 stores Modella acquired are expected to shut — about 65 already have, at least 46 more early next year — and the 110 announced closures include the 70 containing post offices. Stevenage, Bracknell and Orpington are each losing two within months, as are Hull and York; Telford is due to lose its last one in January, the Guardian reports.
It follows a summer announcement that 52 post offices inside Morrisons Daily stores will close this year, part of plans to shut 100 loss-making stores; most TG Jones sites being lost replaced former crown post offices.
TG Jones told The Sun its Trowbridge store closes on 9 January 2027, taking the town’s Post Office with it; a Post Office spokesperson said a replacement could take around six months. In Brentwood the branch inside TG Jones closes on 5 January 2027, though MP Alex Burghart says 20 expressions of interest have been received and a new branch could open in spring.
