How we work

Flip News is a small, independent all-news newsroom based in London: world news, UK news, politics, business, technology, science, health, sport and entertainment — plus our founding beats in connectivity (broadband, satellite, 5G) and celebrity. This page is the public record of our methods — how we verify, how we date, how we build data, how we use images, and how we fix mistakes. It’s a living document: it grows as our data products launch.

How we report

  • Every fact, number, quote, and date must trace to a named source. Nothing publishes until that check passes — a story that can’t be sourced is killed, not rewritten around the gap.
  • We write in en-GB: fibre, organisation, programme. An article that slips is a style bug, and we fix it.
  • We don’t manufacture events, quotes, or statistics. If a figure is uncertain, we say so and link the source so you can check.
  • We never present evergreen explainers as fresh news: articles carry their true dates, and background guides stay in the guides section, not in the Latest feed.

How we build data

Our flagship dataset is the BEAD awards feed — one row per subaward, published as versioned CSV and JSON so researchers, journalists, and other trackers can cite it. The rules are deliberately strict:

  • Every row carries its source. Each award row must include the URL of the state or federal document it was transcribed from — that link is the citation, and a row without one never ships.
  • We say how each row was verified. Rows verified against the primary document are labelled as such; rows transcribed from secondary reporting are labelled press-report, so readers know the coverage is partial until the official record appears.
  • Releases are immutable. Once a dataset version is published it is never edited. Corrections ship as new versions, with a changelog saying what changed and why, and restated awards are linked to their replacements rather than overwritten.
  • Data goes stale, so we re-verify. Any row not re-checked against its source within 90 days is flagged stale before the next release. A wrong deadline or an outdated award amount actively harms readers — if maintenance slips, we cut the dataset rather than mislead.

Current state (20 September 2026): schema v1.0.0; first release 2026.09.19.1 with 17 Texas provider-level subgrantee rows, transcribed from secondary reporting because the Texas Broadband Development Office has not published an official final award list; California and Florida final award lists are likewise not yet published by their broadband offices, so no CA/FL rows ship until they are. County-level tracker pages launching from this dataset will carry visible “last verified” stamps and per-row source links.

How we use images

  • Images on Flip News are licensed — public domain, CC0, or CC-BY/SA — hosted on our own servers, and credited on our image credits page, with alt text describing what’s shown.
  • We prefer a real, licensed photo of the actual subject. If no correct licensed image exists, the article runs imageless rather than with the wrong photo.
  • Fully AI-generated illustrations are labelled as illustrations. We never manufacture a photorealistic image of a real person or a real event and present it as a photograph.

How we correct

When we get something wrong, we fix it and log it. Our public corrections log is the permanent record of every significant correction since launch, and our corrections policy explains how to report an error. A long corrections log should mean better upstream checking, not sloppiness — if it grows, we fix the pipeline.
