Threat email to Mumbai mayor targets Amitabh Bachchan's home and Diljit Dosanjh concert; police step up security
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Rajesh Tawde received an email on Friday morning threatening bomb blasts at her BMC office, Amitabh Bachchan's Juhu home Jalsa, and Diljit Dosanjh's Nov 27 concert at Mahalaxmi Racecourse; police found nothing suspicious in searches and have stepped up security.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Rajesh Tawde received a threat email on Friday morning warning of bomb blasts at her BMC office, Amitabh Bachchan’s Juhu home Jalsa, and singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert at Mahalaxmi Racecourse on 27 November, police said.
The email, which was also marked to Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi, warned of a grenade attack on a school on 31 October and threatened Bachchan’s home between 31 October and 27 November, according to PTI reports. It contained references to “Khalistan” and threatened a suicide attack at the 27 November concert. The email’s sender described the planned grenade attack on Jalsa as retaliation in the name of “khoon ka badla”, the Indian Express reported. That report also identified the sender’s self-given name as “Smith Johnson” and the subject line as “Mumbai Bombay Bolega Khalistan Zindabad”; the PTI versions did not name a sender.
Police searched the mayor’s office and BMC headquarters and found nothing suspicious, an official said. Security has been stepped up at the mayor’s office, Mahalaxmi Racecourse and schools, and a comprehensive investigation has been launched to verify the email’s authenticity, trace its origin and identify the sender.
The development comes a day after Delhi Police denied permission for Dosanjh’s 30 October Delhi concert, citing “specific threat-related inputs” — a separate development reported on 22 October. Follow our Mumbai threats coverage for updates on this story.
