Alberta launches $1,000 rebate for rural satellite internet

Alberta's new Satellite Rebate Program offers up to $1,000 for hardware, installation and taxes to roughly 10,000 rural households beyond the reach of ground-based broadband expansion.

Alberta is offering rural residents up to $1,000 back on satellite internet equipment, in a bid to connect roughly 10,000 households that ground-based broadband projects have not reached and are not expected to reach.

The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program, launched by the provincial government on Friday, reimburses qualifying households for satellite internet hardware, installation and applicable taxes, up to the $1,000 maximum per household. Both homeowners and renters are eligible, and each verified alberta.ca account can claim for up to two households, according to the province’s programme page.

Eligibility is determined from federal broadband availability data identifying locations lacking high-speed internet that are not served by an active expansion project. Qualifying purchases must be made from an authorised vendor between 11 August 2026 and 31 March 2027, with receipts submitted through an online portal at alberta.ca. Applications will be accepted until 31 March 2027.

Starlink kits currently meet the programme’s high-speed connection requirements, the province says, and other suppliers may be added during the intake period. Monthly service costs, hardware rental fees and business connections are not eligible.

The programme sits within the Alberta Broadband Strategy, under which the provincial and federal governments have jointly committed $755 million to expand connectivity. The province says high-speed access supports up to $1.7 billion in annual GDP growth for Alberta, and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta welcomed the rebate as an additional pathway to get residents connected.
