At least 41 injured, 20 seriously, as bus plunges down ravine in Catalonia

At least 41 people were assessed by emergency services and 20 were in a serious condition after a bus collided with a car and plunged about 20 metres down an embankment in Fogars de Montclus, Catalonia.

At least 41 people were assessed by emergency services, 20 of them in a serious condition, after a bus collided with a car and plunged about 20 metres down an embankment in Fogars de Montclus, in the Barcelona province of Catalonia, on Sunday afternoon.

The bus, operated by Sagales on line 573 between Fogars de Montclus information centre and Santa Fe del Montseny, came to rest in undergrowth at the bottom of a ravine, prompting a major rescue operation.

Catalonia’s emergency medical service, the Sistema d’Emergencies Mediques (SEM), deployed 15 ambulances, two medical helicopters and three joint SEM-firefighter teams, and the road was closed in both directions. An emergency reception centre was set up in Can Ramis, in Sant Celoni, to assist those affected.

Firefighters said many of the roughly 100 passengers climbed out of the bus on their own after the crash, according to live coverage of the rescue. No deaths had been reported.

The cause of the collision is not yet known. The president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, said he was monitoring the situation “with great concern” and remained in contact with local authorities.
