Independent federal MP Helen Haines has been injured after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria.
7NEWS reports the member for Indi was hit by a white Land Rover outside her office on Murphy Street at approximately 3.30pm local time on Monday. Emergency services were called to Murphy Street on Monday afternoon, The Guardian reports.
The nature of her injuries has not been confirmed. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has spoken on the incident, The Age reported in its Australia news liveblog.
Haines, elected in 2019, is the first Independent in Australian history to succeed another Independent in a federal seat, succeeding fellow independent Cathy McGowan in Indi. A trained nurse and midwife, she has represented the north-east Victorian electorate since May 2019 (Wikipedia; her campaign profile).
The story is developing.
