Reported $500m Xbox-Netflix deal collapses after $800m counter
Puck reports Netflix offered $500 million for seven years of exclusive Xbox film and TV rights, Xbox countered at $800 million, and the offer was withdrawn — figures neither company has confirmed.
Netflix reportedly offered Microsoft $500 million for seven years of exclusive rights to turn Xbox titles into films and television series, according to a report by Puck News journalist Matthew Belloni, citing three sources familiar with the situation.
According to the report, Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma and the brand’s business affairs team countered at $800 million, after which Netflix rescinded the offer. The reported figures have not been confirmed by either company, and the full scope of the proposed package has not been publicly detailed.
Netflix declined to comment on the report. Xbox said in a statement to Puck: “We have received record-breaking interest in our I.P.; Netflix is a valued partner and we are excited for the forthcoming release of our Minecraft and Diablo animated series together, among other adaptations.”
Puck reports that Xbox is now pursuing smaller deals with more partners instead of one overarching exclusive agreement. Reported examples include the Diablo animated series at Netflix, a third season of Fallout at Amazon, a Call of Duty film at Paramount, and a sequel to A Minecraft Movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
The collapse of the reported talks does not end the two companies’ existing work together, with the Minecraft and Diablo animated series still forthcoming at Netflix.
