Delhi BJP protests near Kharge's residence, stopped by police on march over Modi remark
Delhi BJP leaders and workers protested near Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence on Monday over his remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's father, and were stopped by police as they marched towards Rajaji Marg.
NEW DELHI — The Delhi BJP on Monday held a protest near the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his alleged disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, PTI reported.
The protesters were stopped by police when they tried to march from Sena Bhawan Circle towards Kharge’s residence on Rajaji Marg, PTI said. Delhi BJP leaders and workers raised slogans in protest of the alleged insult, demanding an apology from Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
The protest was part of the BJP’s call for nationwide protests over Kharge’s remark against Modi during an event in Patna on Sunday. IANS reported that BJP workers burnt an effigy during the Delhi protest.
The row began on Sunday at a function marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shrikrishna Singh, when Kharge said the Congress would send those involved in alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to jail. After an audience member interrupted to shout that “Modi won’t go anywhere”, Kharge retorted from the dais: “Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega” — “even Modi’s father would go”, PTI reported.
The Congress has defended Kharge, with its media chief Pawan Khera saying Kharge was referring to Modi’s “ideological father”, the RSS, after a BJP worker first insulted Kharge’s late father, Times Now reported.
The Delhi protest follows the BJP’s Patna protest march earlier on Monday over the same remark.
