Bolsonaro refuses to concede Brazil defeat and seeks annulment of runoff
Flavio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and says he will seek the annulment of Brazil's presidential runoff.
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and says he will seek the annulment of Sunday’s presidential runoff election, Reuters reported.
Bolsonaro said a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin extending voting by two hours was “unacceptable”. Both Bolsonaro’s and Lula’s campaigns had asked for the extension, the Associated Press reported.
With 100 per cent of the vote counted, Brazil’s electoral court announced that Lula had won with 51.8 per cent of the vote, a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes over Bolsonaro, the Associated Press reported. The victory gives Lula a fourth non-consecutive term, with the new term scheduled to begin on 5 January 2027.
The result reverses the first round on 4 October, in which Bolsonaro finished ahead of Lula. Lula’s win was reported by Flip News on Monday; Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede and annulment bid are the new development in the aftermath of the count.
