Belarus warns citizens against nonessential travel to six European states amid protests

Belarus has urged its citizens to avoid nonessential travel to France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Albania, citing mass demonstrations and a sharply deteriorating political situation.

Belarus has urged its citizens to avoid nonessential travel to France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Albania, citing mass demonstrations and a political situation that its Foreign Ministry said had “deteriorated sharply”.

The advisory, issued on Sunday, pointed to protests over pensions, housing, education and corruption, and cited alleged disproportionate use of force by law enforcement and arbitrary detentions, Anadolu Agency reported.

The ministry warned that curfews and states of emergency could be imposed in the affected countries, potentially disrupting public transport, internet access and communications. Belarusians already in the six countries were urged to exercise caution, avoid large crowds and protest areas, and follow updates from local authorities and Belarusian diplomatic missions.

Citizens were also advised to leave through available commercial routes if the situation deteriorates further, and warned that consular and legal assistance may be less accessible because Belarusian diplomatic missions in those countries have limited staff.

The warning comes as cost-of-living protests continued across several European countries over the weekend. In France, authorities said 1,314 people were arrested as demonstrations turned violent for a second weekend, while protests also took place in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
