Russian forces attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles on Wednesday evening, damaging homes and a petrol station and injuring six people, officials said.

Powerful explosions were heard across the capital at about 10.10pm, minutes after an air-raid alert was issued, and the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed Russia had used ballistic weapons, UA News reported.

Kyiv’s military administration said missiles hit private homes and a petrol station on the eastern side of the Dnipro river that bisects the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that strikes hit two districts on the east bank, injuring six people, four of whom were treated in hospital.

In the Dniprovsky district, a car service station and a private residential building were damaged, and debris struck another residential building where, Klitschko said, “there may be people trapped under the rubble”. In the Darnitsky district, missiles hit near a transport infrastructure facility. One resident described windows blown out by the blast, and neighbours rescuing a man and his wife from a burning house.

The drone warning remained in place more than two hours after the alert, Reuters reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Russian drone attack on Kyiv killed at least two people and injured two others, the Kyiv Independent reported.
