Pakistan army chief Asim Munir arrives in Tehran for talks amid US-Iran tensions
Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Tuesday with a delegation for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iranian state media reported, as Pakistan continues mediating between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday with a delegation of Pakistani officials for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iranian state media reported.
Iranian state television announced the arrival on Tuesday morning, with the IRNA news agency also carrying the report. Reuters reported that Munir was travelling with a delegation of Pakistani officials to meet senior Iranian figures, updating its story at 13:05. ISNA reported that his first scheduled engagement was with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and that he was also expected to meet President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the talks related to the US-Iran negotiations but were “mainly focused on bilateral relations and strengthening interactions and cooperation”, AFP reported.
The visit is Munir’s fifth since June and comes as Pakistan plays a key mediating role between Washington and Tehran. A short-lived agreement brokered by Pakistan in June has since collapsed, with the two sides at odds over the future of the Strait of Hormuz, the vital route for global oil and gas shipments.
Qatar’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday that communication between Iran and the US had “not stopped”, with the aim of reaching a solution “as soon as possible”.
The visit follows Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s trip to Tehran on Monday. There has been no official confirmation of the visit from the Pakistani side.
