Christina Applegate reveals MS misdiagnosis: 'I'm still in this. Nothing magical happened'

Christina Applegate told her MeSsy podcast that doctors have reversed her multiple sclerosis diagnosis — but her symptoms have not improved.

Christina Applegate has revealed she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis, telling listeners of her MeSsy podcast that doctors recently informed her she does not have the condition, despite living with the diagnosis since 2021.

The 54-year-old Dead to Me star returned to the podcast she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler on Tuesday (20 October) after a seven-month hiatus, releasing back-to-back new episodes. Through tears, she recounted her doctor’s words: “She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS.’ I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”

Applegate stressed the reversal has changed nothing physically. “You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better,” she said. “I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse.” She said she is “back at square one”, still relies on a wheelchair for medical appointments, and went through a “great depression” while processing the news.

Dr Marwa Kaisey, associate professor of neurology at Cedars-Sinai, joined the second episode and said MS misdiagnosis is “fairly common” — affecting nearly one in five people diagnosed — because there is no single test for the disease. “It’s a list of criteria,” she said.

“I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened,” Applegate added.
