Elon Musk has warned that more than 200 specialist AI cloud companies face failure or consolidation, after SpaceX closed $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units, Reuters reported.

Musk said on Sunday, in a post on X, that debt markets had “almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers”. He added: “That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.”

SpaceX secured the financing because of its investment-grade status and revenue from its Starlink satellite internet and rocket-launch businesses, Musk said. The debt is primarily callable and will fund graphics processor deliveries in the first and second quarters, Reuters reported.

Neoclouds are specialist firms that rent out computing capacity for AI work, mostly serving technology customers with capacity tailored for artificial intelligence. Shares of major neocloud firms fell in premarket trading on Monday, with Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren each down more than 4%, according to TradingView, citing Seeking Alpha.

Musk later ruled out SpaceX buying any of the struggling firms, calling such a move “pointless”, Reuters reported. The warning follows an October forecast from research firm Gartner that more than 80% of neocloud providers will cease operating independently by 2030, Cointelegraph reported.
