Musk says SpaceX has closed $40bn in debt to buy GPUs
Elon Musk says SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units, with the chips due to arrive in the first two quarters of next year.
Elon Musk says SpaceX has closed $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units (GPUs), in a step beyond the early-stage fundraising talks reported earlier this month.
Musk said the company’s investment-grade status and revenue from its Starlink satellite internet and launch businesses had helped preserve its access to credit, Reuters reported.
“This is primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2. Not a major factor this quarter,” Musk said in a post on X, according to Reuters.
The announcement follows reports earlier in October that SpaceX was in early-stage talks to raise about $40 billion in debt to buy chips, with Apollo Global Management leading the financing. Those talks were reported as unconfirmed and capable of ending without a deal; Musk’s announcement does not name lenders or a chipmaker, referring only to GPU purchases.
SpaceX has not said how many GPUs the financing covers or which supplier will provide them.
