Kenya confirms ninth Ebola case as outbreak remains in single cluster

Kenya has confirmed a ninth Ebola case, a 24-year-old relative of the index patient who fell ill while already in quarantine; all nine infections belong to a single transmission cluster with no spread beyond it.

NAIROBI — Kenya’s health ministry has confirmed a ninth case of Ebola, a 24-year-old man and close relative of the outbreak’s first patient, who tested positive on October 19 after developing symptoms while already in quarantine.

Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said the patient was isolated at the first sign of illness and immediately started on treatment. The index patient died, while the remaining eight are stable and responding positively to treatment, the ministry said.

“All nine cases belong to one cluster, and as of today there is no evidence of transmission outside this group,” Amoth said in a statement.

The index case travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo via Uganda, arrived in Nairobi on October 3, and died at a Nairobi hospital on October 5. Kenya’s outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus disease.

Contact tracing has reached 134 of 135 identified contacts — 99.3 per cent — all placed in quarantine. Contacts who entered monitoring on October 6 are due to complete their 21-day follow-up on October 25. The ministry has received 500 doses of medicines, distributed protective equipment and supplies to 28 high-risk counties, and opened a dedicated laboratory at the Kenyatta National Hospital Infectious Disease Unit.

Late on Monday, the US State Department advised Americans to reconsider travel to Kenya and raised its travel advisory level because of health risks.
