Elon Musk has become the largest individual political donor in modern US history, giving about $446 million to the 2026 midterm elections, according to a Washington Post analysis of Federal Election Commission filings published on 23 October. Most of the money supports Republican efforts to hold Congress in the elections on 3 November. The Hill, using a different cutoff, put the total above $442 million.

Filings reported in the analysis put nearly $216 million of Musk’s giving with America PAC, the committee he founded in 2024, including $76.8 million in October alone. A further $168 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, which backs Republican Senate candidates — including $158 million in two September instalments, $75 million on 9 September and $83 million on 23 September — and $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports Republican House candidates.

The scale exceeds Musk’s own previous cycle: he spent more than $250 million backing Donald Trump and other Republican candidates in 2024.

Across the cycle, the 50 biggest donors have given more than $2.7 billion combined, the analysis found, with about $1.67 billion going to Republican-leaning groups and $832 million to Democratic-leaning ones.
