Kangaroos survive Fiji scare 36-22 to book Rugby League World Cup semi-final
Australia came from behind to beat Fiji 36-22 in Brisbane, booking a World Cup semi-final with a game to spare while Fiji face a shootout with New Zealand for the second semi-final place.
Australia booked their place in the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals with a game to spare, coming from behind to beat a gutsy Fiji 36-22 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday, NRL.com reports.
The reigning champions trailed for much of the contest in front of 41,108 fans. Australia led 12-10 at half-time, but Fiji went back in front early in the second half when Valemei crossed for his second, and led 16-12 after 45 minutes before Australia took control.
A quickfire treble from winger Tom Trbojevic turned the game, with the Kangaroos running out six tries to four. Valemei completed a hat-trick for Fiji, with Brandon Wakeham kicking three conversions, but the Bati could not hold off the late Australian surge, FijiVillage reports.
Australia led 12-10 at the break after tries from Kotoni Staggs and Sam Walker, the latter set up by a trademark burst from captain James Tedesco, according to NRL.com. The win keeps Australia unbeaten in Pool A and sends them to a semi-final on Sunday, November 8 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
Fiji must now beat New Zealand on Saturday at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast to keep their tournament alive, with the winner of that shootout taking the second semi-final place from Pool A. New Zealand bounced back from their opening loss to Australia with an 82-16 win over the Cook Islands, NRL.com reports.
Fiji captain Apisai Koroisau said he was disappointed not to win but proud of his side’s effort, and that the belief inside the squad had only grown going into the New Zealand game, FijiVillage reports.
