Bayern say Kompany stable in hospital but out for weeks after training collapse

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany remains in hospital in a stable condition after collapsing during reserve-team training on Friday, but will be sidelined for weeks, the club’s sporting director Max Eberl said on Saturday.

The 40-year-old Belgian had been battling a virus in recent days and missed some training sessions before the collapse at the club’s Sabener Strasse base (https://www.reuters.com/sports/soccer/bayern-boss-kompany-stable-sidelined-weeks-says-club-director-2026-10-24/).

“We need to firstly figure out what it is and then we’ll discuss calmly what the recovery time is to be,” Eberl told reporters in Munich. “We’re not talking about days, but weeks. We all need to be clear on that.” Eberl said Bayern would prioritise Kompany’s recovery and wait for a diagnosis before discussing any potential return (https://www.straitstimes.com/sport/football/bayern-boss-kompany-stable-but-sidelined-for-weeks-says-club-director).

Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the team for Sunday’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg, which Bayern never considered seeking to delay. Danks said he had spoken to Kompany solely to check on his well-being, with no football conversations (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/sport/bayern-boss-kompany-stable-sidelined-weeks-says-club-director-6488786).

Bayern postponed their reserve side’s match following Friday’s collapse. The Bundesliga leaders have 14 points from six matches, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference (https://www.aljazeera.com/sports/2026/10/24/bayern-say-coach-kompany-stable-in-hospital-but-will-be-out-for-weeks).
