Anthropic pledges 5% of its shares to new public benefit fund

Anthropic will commit 5% of its shares to a new wholly-owned public benefit fund, subject to stockholder approval, with the stake able to grow as the company's valuation rises.

Anthropic, the maker of the Claude AI chatbot, has announced it will commit 5% of its shares to a newly established “Anthropic Public Benefit Fund”, subject to stockholder approval. The announcement, made on Sunday 18 October 2026, was reported by Reuters and corroborated by Anthropic’s own announcement.

The structure is designed to grow with the company: an additional 2% of Anthropic’s shares may be added at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline. “Because of the way the Fund is structured, the more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good,” the company said. Anthropic contrasted the move with common practice in the technology industry of offering escalating compensation awards to executives, saying it is instead directing that equity to the public benefit.

The fund will be established as a wholly-owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or similar format, to give flexibility between different forms of giving. None of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad. The fund could pursue large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations; Anthropic cited labour-market impacts of AI as an example, noting it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue.

Anadolu Agency adds context: Anthropic’s co-founders previously pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings, and an employee donation programme involves roughly half its workforce. Combined with the new commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares will be dedicated to public benefit initiatives, with potential increases tied to future valuation milestones.
