Four people have been arrested after an on-duty police officer was shot in the foot in Nottingham city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The officer approached two people in Angel Row at about 4.50am when he was struck by a projectile believed to have been fired from a shotgun, Nottinghamshire Police said. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Officers stopped a vehicle in the Radford area on Sunday evening and arrested a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. A 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman inside the vehicle were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
In the early hours of Monday, officers stopped a second vehicle in Bedfordshire, where a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All four are in custody and being questioned.
A weapon that appeared to be a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun was pictured at the scene on Sunday, where investigators laid evidence markers within two police cordons. The Angel Row cordon has now been lifted, though officers will remain in the area.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas said: “A team of experienced detectives continues to work tirelessly to establish exactly what happened before, during and after this appalling incident,” adding that she was “pleased that four arrests have now been made”. The Sun reports the officer “continues to recover in hospital” and police have asked that his privacy be respected.
