Melania Trump drives women's health overhaul as Trump expected to sign executive order Monday
First Lady Melania Trump pushed the White House to overhaul women's health research, with President Trump expected to sign an executive order on Monday creating a new NIH division and White House task force.
First Lady Melania Trump has pushed the White House — and President Donald Trump — to confront a longstanding gap in American medicine, with the president expected to sign an executive order on Monday creating a new Women’s Health Division at the National Institutes of Health and a White House Women’s Health Task Force, according to a White House document obtained exclusively by USA Today.
The first lady organised a series of working sessions inside the East Wing with physicians and other experts from the public and private sectors, and met officials from Health and Human Services, to understand gaps in care.
“I acted quickly and organized working sessions between the doctors who I originally consulted, East Wing policy makers, the President, Secretary Kennedy, and other key stakeholders to shape this Executive Order, establish the task force, and create a new department within the NIH, dedicated to women’s health exclusively,” she said in a statement provided to USA Today by her senior advisor, Marc Beckman.
Melania Trump is set to lead the Rose Garden event with a speech on women’s health research, using artificial intelligence to speed up discoveries, and ensuring care is accessible and affordable.
“It was abundantly clear that women’s healthcare needs to be modernized, the research gap closed, and further, the need to accelerate the discovery of treatments and cures was glaring,” she added.
The new division will not replace the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, which has safeguarded women’s health since 1990; its broader mandate will coordinate agencies to accelerate discoveries for girls and women. The task force will be led by Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Headlines Plus, citing KYOU-TV, also confirms the Monday signing plan.
