Man charged over alleged 'targeted' car attack on Australian MP Helen Haines
Victoria Police have charged a man with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and the federal offence of harming a public official over the alleged 'targeted' ramming that cost independent MP Helen Haines a leg; the suspect faces court on Wednesday.
Victoria Police have charged a man over what they allege was a “targeted” car attack on independent MP Helen Haines, who lost a leg after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/australia-police-man-charged-lawmaker-helen-haines-hit-car-6475091).
The man was charged on Tuesday with dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury, as well as the federal offence of harming a public official, Victoria police said. The man — named by local media as 43-year-old Brendan Nugent — remains in custody and will face court on Wednesday. Police have not confirmed his name or his motive (https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/19/australia/helen-haines-australian-mp-attack-wangaratta-intl?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_meta).
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the sequence on Tuesday: the vehicle drove down Wangaratta’s main street before turning around and ramming Haines as she stood at the rear of her car, taking items out of the boot (https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/19/australia/helen-haines-australian-mp-attack-wangaratta-intl?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_meta). Barber Ricky Jefferies told the ABC he ran out of his shop, grabbed a knife from the driver’s pocket and pulled the driver from the car before attempting to calm him down (https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/19/australia/helen-haines-australian-mp-attack-wangaratta-intl?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_meta).
The suspect’s parents released a statement saying Haines had been “our friend for more than 20 years and what happened to her yesterday is devastating and unfathomable”, The Age reported. “We would like to sincerely thank members of the local community and police who came to Helen’s aid yesterday after the shocking and horrific crime,” the statement added (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/australia-police-man-charged-lawmaker-helen-haines-hit-car-6475091).
Haines, 65, who represents the federal seat of Indi, was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital, where she underwent surgery. Her condition remains critical (https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/19/australia/helen-haines-australian-mp-attack-wangaratta-intl?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_meta).
