Two women have died and residents across southern Valencia and northern Alicante were ordered to stay indoors on Monday as Storm Adam drenched Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Anadolu Agency reported.

One woman was swept away by a swollen stream in Cabrera de Mar, near Barcelona, on Saturday evening, and her body was found in the sea on Sunday about six kilometres from where she vanished. A second woman died on Sunday night after entering the sea at a beach in Sagunt, Valencia, Anadolu said. The Sun confirmed both deaths.

Adam — officially named by Spain’s Aemet weather agency on 16 October, the first high-impact DANA of the 2026-27 season, according to The Sun — brought record rainfall: the municipality of Forna recorded 718 litres of rain per square metre in just over 24 hours. At least six towns between Gandia and Oliva were cut off, emergency crews used boats to rescue people from flooded homes in Oliva, and helicopters reached residents stranded on rooftops in northern Alicante. Valencia’s regional emergency minister Juan Carlos Valderrama said four-metre waves were stopping swollen rivers draining into the Mediterranean.

Red alerts were issued across Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca, schools were closed across the islands, and flights were cancelled and diverted at Ibiza Airport, The Sun reported. More than 100,000 pupils had classes suspended, and rail operator Renfe halted two commuter lines in Valencia. Aemet expects conditions to ease on Tuesday as the system moves toward southern France, where five departments face orange warnings.
