Google and Constellation sign 20-year deal for 890 MW of new nuclear power

Google and Constellation Energy have signed a 20-year power deal adding 890 MW of new nuclear capacity to the PJM grid, backed by more than $4.3bn of investment and uprates of 11 existing reactors.

Google and Constellation Energy have announced a 20-year power purchase agreement that will bring 890 MW of new nuclear capacity onto the PJM Interconnection grid, the two companies said on Tuesday.

The capacity will come from uprates — efficiency upgrades to turbines, steam generators and digital controls — of 11 existing Constellation-owned nuclear units at six plant sites in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with the first uprate expected online in 2028. PJM is the largest grid operator in the United States, serving about 67 million people across 13 states and Washington DC.

Constellation said the deal represents more than $4.3 billion of new investment, will sustain around 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 construction jobs. Alongside the 20-year agreement, the companies signed a separate 15-year energy supply agreement for a further 2,700 MW from Constellation’s PJM fleet.

The announcement also includes a five-year technology alliance under which Constellation selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise for grid operations, part of an “AI for Energy” blueprint.

The deal follows Constellation’s similar agreement with Amazon announced on 30 September, a $3bn-plus investment in 190 MW of new capacity at Calvert Cliffs expected online in 2030–2032. Barron’s reported Constellation shares jumped about 12 per cent on the Google news on Tuesday.
