Voronezh drone attack kills three and injures 39, regional governor says

A drone attack on Russia's Voronezh region killed three people and injured 39, regional governor Alexander Gusev said, after debris from a downed drone fell on a passenger train.

A drone attack on Russia’s Voronezh region killed three people and injured 39, regional governor Alexander Gusev said, after debris from a downed drone fell on a passenger train.

Gusev first reported two people killed and 17 injured in the overnight attack late on Sunday and early on Monday, before updating the toll to three dead and 39 injured, including three children, according to dpa and APA reports of the governor’s statements. Gusev said air defences shot down 113 drones over the region, including 70 over the city of Voronezh, and that fires broke out at several industrial sites, a business centre in the city centre and a residential building.

The train, travelling from Anapa on the Black Sea to Moscow, was hit when debris fell on it in a suburb of Voronezh, Gusev said. Russian Railways said one carriage was damaged and five passengers were injured, and that train services through Voronezh were suspended.

Russian authorities attributed the attack to Ukraine. Kyiv has not commented on the attack, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the governor’s report. Voronezh is a city of more than one million people about 500 kilometres south of Moscow.
