Flavio Bolsonaro says federal police ordered him to surrender passports and barred him from leaving Brazil

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro said on Monday that federal police asked him to hand over his passports and barred him from leaving the country, a day after he lost Brazil's presidential runoff to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro said on Monday that federal police had requested that he turn in his passports following a visit to his imprisoned father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, Reuters reported (https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/flavio-bolsonaro-says-brazil-federal-police-asked-his-passports-2026-10-26/).

“I was ordered right on the street to hand over my passports, and I’m also prohibited from leaving the country,” Bolsonaro said in a video, Reuters reported. He said he intended to comply and denied planning to flee after the election.

Bolsonaro claimed, without providing evidence, that the request was based on a ruling from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, Reuters reported; the court and federal police did not immediately reply to Reuters’ requests for comment. He said it rested on remarks by his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, who said on a podcast last week that Flavio should leave if he lost. “I never said that,” Flavio insisted, as reported by Al Mayadeen (https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/flavio-bolsonaro-summoned-to-surrender-passport-barred-from).

Brazilian media reported the order annuls all his Brazilian passports, including the diplomatic one, with 24 hours to surrender all travel documents, including other nationalities — he holds an Italian passport — per Demócrata’s account of Brazilian reporting (https://www.democrata.es/en/international/the-supreme-court-of-brazil-prevents-flavio-bolsonaro-from-leaving-the-country-due-to-a-money-laundering-case/). Al Mayadeen reported Moraes is rapporteur of a money-laundering investigation into the financing of “Dark Horse”, a film about Jair Bolsonaro, also targeting lawyer Willer Tomaz; Flavio denies wrongdoing.

It came a day after Lula’s fourth-term runoff win, 51.79% to 48.21%, per Brazil’s electoral authorities via Ynet (https://www.ynetnews.com/article/sjf03ethzx). Flavio Bolsonaro has refused to accept defeat and says he will seek the annulment of the result.
