OpenAI seeks at least $30bn at $1.4tn valuation in pre-IPO bridge round, reports say

OpenAI is in early-stage talks to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, in a round that would act as a bridge to an eventual IPO, Bloomberg reported on 29 September.

OpenAI is in early-stage talks with investors to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion, in a fundraising round that would act as a bridge to an eventual public listing, Bloomberg reported on 29 September, citing people familiar with the matter. The proposed valuation would be set before the new capital is added, investor demand is driving the fundraising effort, and OpenAI declined to comment, the report said.

The round follows the postponement of an IPO originally planned for this year, with the debut now not expected before 2027, according to the reports. Chief executive Sam Altman has said the company will not go public this year so it can concentrate on addressing concerns about AI safety, describing the current environment as an “ill-advised moment” for an IPO. At a developer event, he added that there is no specific deadline in mind for the listing.

The new target would be a steep jump from the $1.2 trillion valuation Bloomberg previously reported under discussion, and from the $122 billion raised in March at an $852 billion valuation. The fundraising comes as OpenAI’s annualised revenue is approaching $70 billion — more than doubling since July, according to Axios, cited by Aju Press. The terms of the round remain at an early stage and could change, the sources cautioned.
