Santander UK app and online banking down for thousands on Friday

Thousands of Santander UK customers were locked out of the bank's app and online banking on Friday morning, with reports peaking at more than 3,600 around 11.45am. The bank says cards and payments are unaffected.

Thousands of Santander UK customers were locked out of the bank’s mobile app and online banking on Friday, unable to log in or make payments.

The outage began early on Friday morning, according to Downdetector, which tracks service failures. Reports peaked at around 3,620 at about 11.45am before easing to roughly 700 still experiencing problems later in the day, the Sun reported. Around 98 per cent of the reports related to mobile and internet banking, with many customers shown a “session timed out” message when trying to log on.

Customers in London and the South West were worst affected, with reports also coming from Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. Many took to social media to complain, one writing that nothing was working “not even on the internet online banking”, and another saying the timing was “typical pay day”.

Santander said: “We’re aware that some customers are currently experiencing difficulties accessing our online and mobile banking services, including our call centres and online chat service. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing and we’re working hard to fix it as soon as possible.”

The bank added that debit and credit cards were not affected and customers could process payments as usual.

Customers of Halifax and TSB also reported problems with their mobile banking apps on Friday, according to the Oldham Times.
