SoftBank completes $30bn OpenAI investment with final $10bn tranche

SoftBank Group has executed the third and final $10 billion tranche of its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, taking its cumulative stake to $64.6 billion for about 13% of the ChatGPT maker.

SoftBank Group has completed its $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI, executing the third and final $10 billion tranche on 1 October through SoftBank Vision Fund 2, the Japanese conglomerate announced.

The tranche brings SoftBank’s cumulative investment in the ChatGPT maker to $64.6 billion, giving it an ownership interest of about 13%. The final payment was funded with the proceeds of a foreign-currency-denominated senior notes issue announced on 24 September.

Effective 30 September, SoftBank also cancelled the remaining $10 billion of undrawn capacity under the $40 billion bridge facility it entered in March — all borrowings under the facility have now been repaid and no undrawn commitments remain.

The $30 billion follow-on commitment was first announced on 27 February as part of OpenAI’s latest fundraising round, in which the company secured $122 billion in commitments that valued it at $852 billion. Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank anchored the round, with SoftBank’s share paid in three $10 billion tranches via Vision Fund 2.

SoftBank has become one of the world’s biggest backers of OpenAI under founder Masayoshi Son’s push to make the group a dominant investor in artificial intelligence. Last month it raised $11.1 billion in what Reuters described as the largest high-yield corporate bond sale globally to fund its OpenAI bet.
