Trump says US working on 'massive' Belarus potash deal; fertiliser stocks fall

President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States is working on a “massive” deal to buy potash from Belarus, and fertiliser stocks fell.

“The United States is working on a massive Deal with respect to the purchase of Potash from Belarus,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday morning. “The pricing would be for substantially less than we are currently paying to Canada, very good news for our Farmers and Ranchers.”

Shares of potash producers dropped after the post, Dow Jones Newswires reported: Nutrien fell 4.1% to $73.97, Mosaic slipped 2.9% to $23.77, and Intrepid Potash declined 2.2% to $36.70 as of 15:18 GMT.

No price, volume or delivery timeline for the proposed purchase has been disclosed. Canada currently supplies about 80% of the potash used on US farms, according to Nutrien, and Washington agreed in December 2025 to lift sanctions on Belarusian potash after Alexander Lukashenko freed 123 political prisoners, including Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski.

Potash is a key fertiliser ingredient, and prices have risen sharply since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
