US import bans on Canadian-made dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles take effect at 12:01 am on Tuesday, the latest escalation in the trade war between the two countries.
United States import bans on select Canadian products — dairy, alcohol and motorcycles — are set to take effect at 12:01 am on Tuesday, the latest escalation in the ongoing trade war between the two countries.
The bans follow executive orders signed by President Trump on 8 September, which the White House said were a response to Canada’s own counter-tariff measures that took effect earlier that day. Those Canadian tariffs were themselves retaliation for US 50 per cent tariffs on numerous Canadian goods.
Under the bans, dozens of alcohol products will be barred from import, including rye, whisky, wine, beer, vermouth, tequila, vodka and rum, in both packaged and unpackaged versions, according to a White House fact sheet. Canada exported $1.36 billion in alcoholic beverages in 2023, of which 90 per cent went to the United States.
On dairy, whey is the main focus, with whey protein and other whey products on the list, alongside cane and invert molasses. Statistics Canada reported just over $700 million in dairy exports to the US in 2024.
Motorcycles, including mopeds, fitted with a reciprocating internal combustion engine of more than 800 ccs are also covered.
There is no sign the trade dispute will end before the bans take effect. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said President Trump was “comfortable” with the state of trade talks, while Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said Canada “maintains ongoing communications with our American counterparts”.
