Congo confirms Ebola has spread to North Ubangi, an eighth province

DR Congo health authorities on Sunday confirmed the Ebola outbreak has spread to an eighth province, North Ubangi, after two cases were confirmed there.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to an eighth province, North Ubangi, which borders the Central African Republic, the country’s public health institute confirmed on Sunday.

Congo’s public health institute (INSP) confirmed the spread on Sunday, three days after Reuters first reported on Thursday that two cases had been confirmed in North Ubangi, citing two health officials. Until Sunday there had been no official statement by Congolese authorities.

North Ubangi now joins the other affected provinces in an outbreak that has continued to widen across the country. The confirmation marks the first official acknowledgement that the virus has reached the province on the border with the Central African Republic.

The INSP, Congo’s national public-health institute, is the authoritative voice on the outbreak. Its Sunday confirmation replaces Thursday’s report — which attributed the two North Ubangi cases to two unnamed health officials and drew no formal response — as the official account, making North Ubangi the eighth province affected.
