More than 50 arrested at Palestine Action support rally outside Labour conference
Merseyside Police arrested more than 50 people at a Defend Our Juries protest outside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool on Sunday, after more than 250 demonstrators sat down with banners declaring support for the proscribed group Palestine Action.
More than 50 people have been arrested by Merseyside Police at a protest outside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool in support of the proscribed organisation Palestine Action, the BBC has reported.
More than 250 demonstrators sat down outside the conference venue on Sunday with banners reading “I support Palestine Action”, as part of a Defend Our Juries-organised rally. Police made arrests under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation.
Among those detained was Margaret Owen, a 94-year-old human rights barrister. Amnesty International condemned the arrests.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the government would “robustly defend” the ban on Palestine Action as it faces a Supreme Court review of the proscription, which took effect in July 2025.
Sunday’s rally was a separate event from Saturday’s vigil outside the conference, at which Massive Attack musician Robert Del Naja was arrested.
