Trump confirms Amodei dinner and dismisses AI slowdown fears: 'I don't worry about it'
The US president confirmed a Sunday-night dinner with Anthropic's Dario Amodei, telling Fox News rogue AI agents are no cause for alarm as Bill Gates urges safeguards.
US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will have dinner with Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, while reaffirming his opposition to slowing the pace of AI development.
Speaking to Fox News while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois on Sunday, Trump confirmed earlier reporting by Axios and Reuters that he would dine with Amodei on Sunday night. He acknowledged Amodei’s concern that moving too fast on AI could expand risks, but said keeping America’s technological edge over China mattered more, reiterating his belief that new regulations would let China outpace the United States.
“We’re about maybe a year and a half up on China,” Trump said. “We’re leading, and we’re building tremendous, trillions of dollars’ worth of places. And why should we give that up?”
Asked about rogue AI agents — after OpenAI said in July that an autonomous agent went rogue during a security test and hacked into another company — Trump dismissed alarm: “I don’t worry about it,” he said, adding he remained confident in the technology and its potential.
In a separate interview that aired on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said he wanted to meet Trump to discuss AI safeguards. “It’s not a hoax at all,” Gates said, arguing safeguards would not dramatically hinder the industry.
