Trump, House speaker Mike Johnson and tech CEOs to meet on AI on 29 September, Reuters reports

US President Donald Trump, Republican House of Representatives speaker Mike Johnson and the chief executives of leading technology companies will hold a meeting on artificial intelligence on 29 September, Reuters reported late on Thursday, citing a source familiar with the planned meeting.

The meeting, first reported by Axios, comes as the world’s leading AI companies have warned of the risks posed by increasingly powerful systems and appealed for governments to work together to manage them. Further details of the planned meeting were not immediately available.

Trump told world leaders at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that he “rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control” AI, describing the technology as “amazing” but saying the United States would be careful. Trump has argued that the US does not need new AI-specific regulations.

The United States and China, the two leading powers in AI development, have taken different approaches to oversight. China has imposed rules governing AI algorithms and training data, including requirements that AI-generated content be clearly labelled.

The meeting follows a tense week on AI policy in Washington: the White House has asked OpenAI and Anthropic to hold new models from British testers until a US review is complete, Politico reported, and AI leaders including Sam Altman have spoken publicly about growing safety concerns.
