Trump and Mamdani hold first Gracie Mansion summit as UN week begins

Donald Trump and New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani sat down at Gracie Mansion on Monday for their third face-to-face meeting — the first visit to the mayor’s official residence by a sitting president since Ronald Reagan called on Ed Koch in 1981.

The closed-press meeting, scheduled for 4:10pm local time according to White House guidance, took place as Trump arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly, where he addresses world leaders on Tuesday. “The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers,” Mamdani’s office said.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that Gracie Mansion was “one of my favorite places in the World”. At a joint press conference afterwards, he told Mamdani: “I’ve seen it with numerous different mayors, and I said some great ones and some not so great ones. So hopefully you’re going to be a great one. I’ll be able to say you’re going to be a great one, and you’re off to a start.”

Mamdani said the two discussed “how we can work together to deliver a lower cost of living for New Yorkers”. The mayor is pressing Trump for $21 billion in federal grants to deck over rail tracks at Sunnyside Yard for affordable housing.

The pair once traded “fascist” and “communist” jibes during the campaign but have built an unlikely working partnership since, with two White House meetings in November and February. Differences remain on crime, deportations, taxes and Gaza.
