Donald Trump kicked off a 32-day campaign tour ahead of the 3 November midterms on Thursday with back-to-back rallies in Denton, Texas and Oklahoma, as a new AP-NORC poll put his approval rating at a career low of 31%, Al Jazeera reported on 2 October.

Trump plans to visit the 35 most competitive House and Senate races in the coming weeks, with stops in Alabama, Ohio and Nebraska after Texas and Oklahoma, USA Today reported on 1 October. Republicans are defending majorities in both chambers; Trump is not on the ballot himself.

The AP-NORC poll, conducted 24–28 September among 2,140 adults with a ±2.9 percentage-point margin of error, found just 26% approved of his handling of the economy and 17% of his handling of the cost of living. Some 69% said his handling of the cost of living was worse than expected, and 65% said high prices were a result of his policies, USA Today reported. The Wall Street Journal put his approval at 37% — the lowest for a president heading into a midterm since the Journal began polling in 1990 — while Quinnipiac recorded 34% approval and 61% disapproval.

In Denton, at the Peterbilt Motors Company truck plant, Trump dismissed the numbers: “I give us an A+ on the government, on economics, on everything,” he said, adding: “We’re doing an extremely poor job of promotion and an extremely great job of running the country.” The AP-NORC poll also found 71% of Americans disapproved of the war on Iran, and about half were worried about affording food and petrol.
