Trump names Belarus envoy John Coale as nominee for special presidential envoy for hostage affairs
Donald Trump said on Truth Social on Sunday that his Belarus envoy John Coale — credited with securing the release of over 65 Americans and 800 political prisoners — will replace Adam Boehler as special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, with the rank of ambassador.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that lawyer and current Belarus envoy John Coale would be his nominee for special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, with the rank of ambassador.
“I am pleased to announce that John Coale, Esq., a great lawyer and my incredibly successful Envoy for Belarus, will be my new Nominee for Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, with the rank of Ambassador,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, Reuters reported.
Trump credited Coale with securing “the return of over 65 Americans and Allied Citizens from Belarus over the last year, and negotiated the release of more than 800 political prisoners from multiple countries in Eastern Europe”. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 15 prisoners last month after talks with Coale, who has been talking to Minsk for more than a year, according to Reuters.
Coale will replace Adam Boehler, whom Trump said had “brought back 196 hostages”. Boehler, who in August helped secure the release of a former American marine from Russia, will continue to assist in other matters as a senior adviser, Trump said.
