Cowboys acquire cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in trade with Steelers
The Dallas Cowboys have acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder, ending a lengthy contract stand-off that kept the 26-year-old off the field all season.
The Dallas Cowboys have acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers, ending a lengthy contract dispute that kept the 26-year-old off the field through the first three weeks of the season. The deal was struck late Wednesday night and announced by the Cowboys on Thursday morning, Reuters reports (https://www.reuters.com/sports/cowboys-acquire-cb-joey-porter-jr-trade-with-steelers—flm-2026-10-01/).
The Cowboys confirmed the acquisition on their website, while the exact compensation was reported by multiple outlets as a 2027 sixth-round draft pick and a 2028 second-round choice, according to USA Today (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2026/10/01/joey-porter-jr-trade-cowboys-steelers/92036375007/).
Porter had sought a contract extension throughout the offseason, but the Steelers stuck to their policy of not negotiating once the season begins. A back injury kept him out of the entire preseason, and Pittsburgh listed him on the injury report for all three games before ruling him out of Thursday night’s trip to the Cleveland Browns.
Last season Porter started all 14 games for the Steelers, logging 52 tackles, one sack, one interception and a career-high 14 passes defensed. In 47 career games (41 starts) he has 165 tackles, three interceptions, one sack and 31 passes defensed.
Porter fills an immediate need for the 1-2 Cowboys: Cobie Durant missed last week with a hamstring injury and sat out Wednesday’s practice, and Shavon Revel Jr. is nursing knee and ankle injuries. USA Today notes the deal continues a busy trade pipeline between the clubs, following the George Pickens trade in May 2025 and the Broderick Jones move in August 2026.
