US suspends consular services in Brazil ahead of Sunday vote

The United States has suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates in Brazil ahead of Sunday's presidential election, citing unspecified security concerns.

The United States suspended consular services at its embassy and consulates in Brazil on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s presidential election, citing unspecified security concerns, Reuters reported (https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/us-suspends-consular-services-before-brazil-vote-citing-security-2026-10-02/).

The State Department did not elaborate on the security issues or link them to the vote. In a statement issued Thursday, it said: “Consular Services in the US Embassy and Consulates in Brazil will be suspended starting Friday, October 2 due to security concerns.”

US citizens needing emergency assistance were told not to come to the embassy, consulates or other American diplomatic facilities during the suspension. No date for resuming services was given. The suspension was independently corroborated by Spanish outlet Demócrata (https://www.democrata.es/en/international/usa-halts-its-consular-services-in-brazil-for-security-reasons/).

The announcement comes two days before Brazilians vote in a presidential contest that Reuters describes as deciding whether Latin America’s largest nation follows the conservative shift sweeping the region or charts its own course.

Leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has warned of foreign interference in the election, including fresh tariffs from Washington. Violent crime has also dominated voter concerns in election polling, prompting candidates to pledge tougher security measures.
