PSG v Lyon moved to Monday amid Paris protest security fears

Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 clash with Lyon has been moved from Sunday to Monday night after Paris police banned the Parc des Princes staging over security fears, as France braces for a weekend of protests and the match clashes with the Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash with Lyon at the Parc des Princes has been moved from Sunday to Monday, the league announced on Friday, after the Paris Prefecture of Police banned the fixture at the police’s request as the capital braces for another weekend of protests.

“The LFP takes note of the police decree prohibiting the staging of the game between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday at 8:45 p.m. … and has decided to reschedule the match for Monday at 8:30 p.m.,” the league said.

The Monday date clashes with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, meaning holder Ousmane Dembélé will miss the event. Ten PSG players are among the 30 nominees, including Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

France will mount a “massive” security operation for Saturday’s demonstrations, with troops reinforcing police, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Tuesday. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced that around 70,000 security personnel will be deployed nationwide this weekend, after rioting and looting swept Paris and other French cities on October 17 — among the worst urban violence in years.

Sunday’s NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France further stretches police resources. Toulouse’s home match against Troyes has already been moved from Saturday to Sunday by local authorities, while Marseille and Lille said their club stores were looted during last weekend’s unrest. Monday’s match is a top-of-table clash: Lyon lead on 14 points, level with champions PSG but ahead on goal difference.
