Shadab Khan's unbeaten 113 rescues Pakistan to one-wicket win over England in Lahore

Pakistan beat England by one wicket in the ODI tri-series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, thanks to an unbeaten 113 from Shadab Khan that rescued the hosts from 154 for nine in pursuit of 242.

England, put in to bat, were bowled out for 241 in 46.4 overs. Ben Duckett top-scored with 105, Sam Curran made 42 and Gus Atkinson finished unbeaten on 36, while Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi led the bowling with four wickets.

Pakistan’s chase began disastrously, with Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub and Babar Azam dismissed inside the first seven overs for just 31 runs. Saad Baig’s quickfire 32 off 22 balls briefly lifted the hosts, but England kept striking and Pakistan slipped to 103 for six before the halfway mark, and then to 154 for nine.

Shadab, who scored just three runs off his first 12 deliveries, gradually found his rhythm, using his feet against the pace bowlers and unleashing sweeps and reverse-sweeps against England’s spinners. News18 reported that his century broke the record for the most runs scored in an ODI innings while batting at No. 8 or below, and that it was his maiden ODI century.

The drama peaked when Shadab was given out leg-before on 97 against Gus Atkinson, prompting handshakes as England thought they had won. A review revealed an inside edge, allowing him to survive, and he then hit Atkinson for consecutive boundaries and a six to reach his century. Haris Rauf hit a boundary against Henry Crocombe in the 48th over to seal the win, with Pakistan finishing on 243 for nine.
