Manchester United slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that will heap further pressure on under-fire manager Michael Carrick, who benched captain Bruno Fernandes (Reuters).
Fernandes was left out of the starting team after criticising Carrick’s tactics in a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Italian side Como in midweek, and he stayed on the bench for the whole game. Rayan scored for Bournemouth in the 38th minute, Marcus Tavernier added a second before the break, and Evanilson’s third saw fans head for the exits, with the final whistle greeted by boos.
The defeat left Carrick’s side 16th in the Premier League on seven points, one above the relegation zone, and without a win in the league since beating Ipswich Town 5-2 on August 30.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield for their first home win of the Premier League season, with Pascal Gross steering a Florian Wirtz shot into his own net in the 17th minute and Alexander Isak scoring the second four minutes later. Liverpool moved up to fourth on 15 points, one behind Brighton. Newcastle United won 2-0 away to Crystal Palace, while Hull City were held 1-1 at home by Brentford.
