OpenAI to sell its top AI models through Google Cloud
OpenAI will make its frontier AI models and Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud's Model Garden in the coming weeks, putting its models on all three major hyperscalers.
OpenAI will make its frontier artificial intelligence models and its Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, the companies said on Wednesday, deepening ties between two AI rivals.
The partnership will bring OpenAI’s latest models, such as GPT-6 Astra, to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and put existing cloud spending commitments towards the purchases, according to a company blog post, as OpenAI tries to sell its models to more enterprise customers.
Customers in regulated industries will also be able to access OpenAI models through Google Cloud’s access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure to build what the companies describe as agentic AI workflows.
Alphabet’s Google has become the latest major hyperscaler to offer OpenAI models to its customers, after OpenAI’s exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April. OpenAI has since expanded distribution to Amazon Web Services and now to Google Cloud, placing its models on all three of the largest cloud providers.
The deal adds another layer to an increasingly complex relationship between the two companies, which compete in core AI products and search even as the economics of building and deploying large models push them towards cooperation. Google has moved to position its cloud unit as a neutral platform offering a broader choice of models, and Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian has previously told Reuters that the platform is open to any model popular with developers.
