Fire engulfs Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' retreat in Bavaria; suspect detained

German police have detained a suspect after a major fire engulfed the historic Kehlsteinhaus — known as the 'Eagle's Nest' — near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, with officers treating the blaze as suspected arson.

German police have detained a suspect after a fire broke out at the historic Kehlsteinhaus — the mountain guest house known as the “Eagle’s Nest” — on Friday evening, with investigators treating the blaze as suspected arson.

Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel in the area around Berchtesgaden, in southern Bavaria, were battling the flames after the building caught fire, police said. The alarm was raised shortly after 9pm local time, and the structure was already engulfed in flames — described as “completely ablaze” — when fire crews and police reached the remote summit site. Emergency services arrived at about 9.52pm, police said, and firefighters struggled against the location’s altitude of 1,834 metres above sea level.

Officers heading to the scene encountered a motorcyclist and alerted the fire brigade following behind them; the man was stopped and arrested. Police told German newspaper BILD that arson was suspected, but it remains unclear whether the arrested man was involved in starting the fire, and the exact cause of the blaze has yet to be established. No motive has been given. No injuries were reported, and authorities believed nobody was inside the building when the fire broke out.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Maier said a criminal-police investigation was under way, with a “suspicious person” taken into temporary custody.

The Kehlsteinhaus, built in 1937–38 as a teahouse and reception venue for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, was used as a retreat by Nazi officials including Hitler. Hitler rarely visited the site, which was designed for political representation. The building survived the Second World War largely unscathed, has operated as a mountain inn since 1952, and is owned by the Free State of Bavaria, housing a restaurant and exhibitions documenting its links to Nazi Germany.
