Mecca Pact delegation arrives in Tehran for talks with Pezeshkian and Rezaei

Delegations from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye are in Tehran for talks with Iranian officials, with meetings scheduled with President Masoud Pezeshkian and security chief Mohsen Rezaei, according to AP and Gulf News reports.

Delegations from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye are in Tehran on Monday for talks with Iranian officials, the Associated Press reported, citing two regional officials, with an Iranian official also confirming the delegations’ arrival. The reports reviewed confirm the arrival and the meetings; they do not confirm any final agreement.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman is leading the Kingdom’s delegation, Saudi diplomat Rayed Krimly said in a post on X, as reported by Gulf News. Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Ibrahim Kalin, director of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organisation, are also taking part, Krimly said. Representatives of the agreement’s member countries are scheduled to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Iran’s deputy security secretary, Ali Bagheri Kani, told state television that the meeting would be held with Rezaei and that it had been proposed during Munir’s visit to Tehran last week, Gulf News reported. Krimly said the visit is part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate the regional crisis and promote dialogue and diplomatic solutions, in support of mediation efforts by Qatar and Pakistan.

The Associated Press reported that the Yemen conflict and Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia were among the subjects for discussion, and that Saudi Arabia described the visit as an effort to reduce tensions and improve regional security.

This is a follow-up to Flip News’s report on Monday morning, which said the meeting was set for Monday on the word of two sources, with no official confirmation published at that time. The delegations’ arrival and the official confirmations since then are the new development. No outcome, joint statement or agreement from the Tehran meetings had been announced in the reports reviewed.
