White House says Melania Trump has secured Oleshky ceasefire — neither Moscow nor Kyiv has confirmed

The White House says First Lady Melania Trump has secured a ceasefire localised to Oleshky in Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast, due to begin 29 October — though neither Moscow nor Kyiv had confirmed the claim at the time of reporting.

The White House announced on Friday that First Lady Melania Trump has “secured a ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine localised to Oleshky in Kherson Oblast, under Russian occupation since February 2022.

The ceasefire is due to begin on 29 October 2026, allowing humanitarian aid to enter the frontline city and preparations for a civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway, with both sides agreeing to temporarily halt all military action there. Reuters

Neither Moscow nor Kyiv had confirmed the statement at publication — Al Jazeera said neither side “immediately confirmed the statement on Friday”, and the Kyiv Independent wrote that “neither Russia nor Ukraine has made any comments on the ceasefire at the time of publication”. The story stands as a White House claim unless and until confirmed.

The White House said Mrs Trump acted as “Exclusive Intermediary”, working directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” she said, adding its remaining population is “comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water.” She added: “I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” and said an unnamed “impartial American media organization” would accompany teams on the ground.

The crisis has deepened in recent weeks: Pope Leo XIV has drawn attention to the city’s plight, while reporting has described a blockade, fleeing civilians targeted by drones, and dire food and medical shortages. Khaleej Times
