Gunmen killed at least 40 people in an attack on a village in Nigeria’s north-eastern Taraba state on Friday afternoon, Amnesty International said (Reuters, Al Jazeera).

A large group of gunmen carried out the attack on Binnari village in the Karim Lamido area, police said in a statement on Saturday. Police had earlier confirmed 10 people killed, but more bodies were recovered later on Saturday, Amnesty said.

Residents told the AFP news agency the attackers opened fire just after Friday prayers, arriving on about 50 motorcycles, two men apiece. One resident said villagers counted more than 20 bodies after the attackers left, with some people still missing.

The attackers looted food from shops, police said. Amnesty said the gunmen also burned foodstuffs, homes, shops and motorcycles, leaving the community “littered with dead bodies, some burnt beyond recognition”, as families reported many still missing.

Amnesty strongly condemned the attack and called for an impartial investigation and adequate reparations for survivors. It criticised the Nigerian authorities for continuing “to leave rural communities in some parts of the north at the mercy of gunmen that are repeatedly committing atrocities with impunity”.

Northern Nigeria has seen a surge in attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs, known locally as bandits, who raid villages, abduct residents for ransom and steal livestock, Reuters reported.
