Massive blast rocks weapons site west of Saraqib in Syria's Idlib province

A massive explosion rocked an area west of Saraqib in Syria's Idlib province on Monday, with Syrian state media reporting it was caused by the detonation of war remnants during disposal operations; no casualty toll for this blast was reported in the sources checked.

A massive explosion rocked an area west of Saraqib in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province on Monday, Al Bawaba reported (https://www.albawaba.com/news/massive-blast-rocks-west-saraqib-syria’s-1639940).

Syrian state media reported that the blast was caused by the detonation of war remnants during disposal operations, according to Al Bawaba. State broadcaster Al-Ikhbariya initially attributed the explosion to explosives left over from the former regime, while Syrian television later reported that the blast occurred during the destruction of war remnants.

Videos circulating on social media showed a large fire and thick plumes of smoke rising from a weapons depot in Idlib, with secondary blasts visible, Al Jazeera’s newsfeed reported (https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2026/10/26/huge-explosion-at-a-weapons-depot-in-syria).

Local emergency services have managed to bring the blaze under control, according to Syrian state media as quoted by Al Bawaba.

No casualty toll for this blast was reported in the sources checked. The incident comes amid a series of explosions at weapons and ammunition storage sites across Syria: the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported at least five such incidents since early September 2026, killing 37 people and injuring around 27 others, with additional people reported missing — a series toll, not a toll for the Saraqib blast itself.

Previous incidents in the Idlib region include an early September blast involving a vehicle loaded with ammunition in Binnish that killed five people, and a September 9 blast at a temporary weapons and war-remnants depot near Sarmada that killed more than a dozen people and injured others, Al Bawaba reported.
